Mechanical Engineer – Physical Electronics USA

Physical Electronics Inc. (aka PHI – ) designs, manufactures, markets and services analytical instrumentation for the global Surface Analysis Market.  These products require mechanical design engineering in the disciplines of in-vacuum sample handling and motion, precision charged particle optics and sources, complex vacuum chambers and housings, custom adaptations based on special customer requests, and other precision mechanical components,  assemblies, and tooling  to support the entire PHI product line.  PHI’s products are sold to leading research institutes and academic and industrial laboratories worldwide.

We are seeking an experienced mechanical design engineer who can quickly become the company’s technology leader in mechanical engineering.  This position requires high level capabilities in computer aided design (PHI uses ProEngineer) along with the associated costing, project planning, and prototyping skills.  Vacuum experience is preferred.   The position also partners with system engineering and other disciplines for integration testing and provides consulting support to the marketing, manufacturing, and service organizations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Translate marketing requirements into top level and component level engineering concepts.  Attend weekly special products meetings.  Provide development cost and time estimates.  Provide conceptual designs for customer driven specials.
  • Design, prototype (procure, build, test), document and support mechanical components and assemblies based on reviewed and approved design concepts.  Drawings are normally created by a senior CAD specialist.  Optics requirements and models are provided by scientists from the advanced technology group.
  • Partner with other engineering personnel in system level design, integration testing and documentation.
  • Lead small project teams and provide technical mentoring to less experienced team members (this is not a supervisory role).
  • Maintain technical currency and insure PHI’s state-of-the-art design capability through self-study, continuing education and development of new technology.
  • Provide technical consulting and non-conformance dispositions on any/all mechanical prototypes and production materials.

Critical Skills / Knowledge

  • Broad mechanical design skills using computer aided design software (PHI uses ProEngineer) including tight tolerance and high precision components, assemblies, and mechanisms.
  • Applicable technical proficiency in physics, heat transfer, vibration, mechanics, properties of materials with strong considerations regarding high and ultra-high vacuum applications.
  • Appreciation of charged particle optics, electrical, electro-mechanical, electronics, and software engineering which are also strong disciplines and constitute the bulk of research and development at Physical Electronics.
  • Experience with vacuum compatible materials including metals, ceramics, and polymers.
  • Manufacturing knowledge in machining, vacuum welding, forming, plating, coatings, and assembly technologies.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to project design solutions to international customers and colleagues using collaborative meeting tools with visual communications and presentations.
  • Effective design project leadership: estimating, planning, risk mitigation, execution.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor degree in mechanical engineering; advanced degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience.
