Field Service Engineer

We are currently seeking a Field Service Engineer located in the Washington D.C. area to join our team.  

As a Field Service Engineer for Physical Electronics, you will perform installations of complex surface analysis instruments, including customer operational training. You will also carry out scheduled planned maintenance and provide repair and troubleshooting service at customer locations. This position requires frequent domestic travel, as well as periodically in eastern Canada.

This position does not directly support a Fab line, and does not require shift, overnight or on-call work assignment.

Qualified candidates will have a minimum of a 2-4 year degree in electronics, physics, or engineering field, or equivalent Military electronics training, be able to read and interpret schematics, and be able to communicate and deal effectively with customers. A valid driver’s license is required as well as a passport or ability to obtain a passport. Experience with ultra-high vacuum is a plus.

Entry-Level Software Engineer

PHI is seeking an entry-level software engineer in the development of instrument control, data acquisition, and user interface software for all of PHI’s surface analysis products. The role requires a highly motivated individual who is passionate to work in a cross-functional team to solve tough challenges and deliver high-quality in-house software for PHI’s instruments. Our small company culture will allow you to have hands-on experience and contribute your talents to the entire product life cycle.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work as a team to develop your expertise in at least one area of PHI’s software. This includes system and hardware control, multi-threading finite state machines for running data acquisition and other automated tasks, data management and data analysis software for extracting application-oriented results from raw data, and user interface software.
  • Perform all phases of software development including design, implementation, testing, integration, documentation, and maintenance of software.
  • Engage in architecture, design, and code reviews.
  • Maintain and improve existing features and implement new and innovative ideas for the future.
  • Work closely with lab scientists to translate scientific applications into instrument user stories and requirements.
  • Collaborate with other engineering groups in creating system level specification, design, and integration testing.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in computer science or related field.
  • Experience working with capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
  • Experience working with databases and cloud computing preferred.

UI/UX Software Engineer

PHI is seeking an UI/UX software engineer in the development of instrument control and user interface software for all of PHI’s surface analysis products. This is a leading role in the design and development of the user interface for PHI’s products, ensuring that the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) are exceptional. The role requires a highly motivated individual who is passionate about designing and developing attractive, and easy-to-use software. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assume primary responsibility for the design and implementation of the PHI software user interface (UI) and ensure a very positive user experience (UX).
  • Translate system control and user interface requirements into software design requirements by working closely with lab scientists, service engineers, and a partner company in Japan.
  • Develop prototypes to prove out key design concepts and quantify technical constraints.
  • Perform all phases of software development including design, implementation, testing, integration, documentation, and maintenance of software.
  • Engage in architecture, design, and code reviews.
  • Maintain and improve existing features and implement new and innovative ideas for the future.
  • Collaborate with other engineering groups in creating system level specification, design, and integration testing.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated success and passion for UI and UX design and implementation for PC-based instrumentation control.
  • Highly skilled in object-oriented analysis and design. Proficient in at least one object-oriented programming language (e.g., C++, Object Pascal, Python).
  • Proficient in the best practices for the full software development life cycle including requirements gathering, coding standards, design and code reviews, source control management, build processes, and testing.
  • Demonstrated a creative and innovation-driven mindset with the ability to articulate engineering design strategies to usability, quality, and performance.
  • Excellent problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical thinking skills.
  • Self-motivated with outstanding drive for results.
  • High attention to detail and dedicated to quality and excellence.

Receiving/Shipping/Cycle Counting

We are seeking an individual to conduct all functions necessary in order for efficient operation of the receiving dock shipping dept. as well as other stockroom inventories, Internal parts requests.

  • Ship and receive domestic and international goods from Chanhassen location.
  • Document shipping and receiving transactions in company database.
  • Microsoft Dynamics "GP" (Great plains) Experience preferred.
  • Perform cycle counting on company inventory.
  • Route goods to and physically transact inventory from appropriate stocking locations.
  • Handle and properly pack potentially hazardous materials to ensure safe shipment.
  • HAZMAT, IATA, 49CFR Shipping dangerous goods experience preferred.
  • Ensure accurate completion of necessary transportation and customs paperwork
  • Operate essential dock station equipment, for example forklift, box compactor, etc.
  • Request parts through our purchasing dept. and management of the Customer service stock by making sure our inventory levels are adequate for all customer needs (Internal/External) Report Shortages and damaged goods

Electronics Design Engineer & Group Leader

PHI is seeking an electronics design engineer who can lead a small design group (4-6 members), coordinate activities with PHI’s contract electronics manufacturing partners, and be a technology leader in the design of custom, mixed signal, control and data acquisition electronics. The role will include hands-on design and prototyping (procure, build, test) of new electronics, personnel supervision, resource planning, and project management responsibilities. The electronics design group also partners with software and systems engineering in integration testing and provides consulting support to the system manufacturing and service organizations.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide technical and supervisory leadership to a small group of mixed signal electronic design engineers and technicians.
• Provide leadership in creating and managing strategic partnerships with contract electronics manufacturers.
• Translate system level requirements into unit level engineering specifications. Provide development cost and time estimates.
• Design, prototype (procure, build, test), document, and support mixed signal electronic controls.
• Manage the work assignments of team members; provide project planning input and resource estimates; work with our parent company in Japan (Ulvac PHI) and the PHI R&D management team to create the annual software engineering plan.
• Maintain technical currency and insure PHI’s state-of-the-art design capability through self-study, and continuing education.
• Partner with other engineering groups in managing system level design, integration testing and documentation.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

• Mixed signal electronics design, test & integration
    o Control and data acquisition/processing
    o Low noise, medium-high speed analog circuits
    o Medium-high voltage (200 v to 30 kV) analog circuits
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art PCB and chassis level electronics manufacturing technology and processes.
• Knowledge of best practice design for manufacturability
• Embedded control system design and test
• Effective design project leadership: estimating, planning, risk mitigation, execution management
• Competency in modern electronic design CAD tools: circuit layout, circuit simulation, firmware development, C-language & VB.net programing
• Management acumen --- a demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervisory oversight of a small, highly technical design engineering team
• Complex hardware/software system level design, test, and debug

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience.

Instrumentation Development Scientist

PHI is seeking an instrumentation development scientist who can be a company technology leader in the conceptualization and design of new products for the surface analysis instrumentation market. Working with a team of design engineers in the classic engineering disciplines (electronic, mechanical, software and systems) this role requires more of a scientific orientation, and an ability to fill the “white spaces” in an interdisciplinary product development group. It also requires a strong understanding of the applications for PHI’s products, allowing collaboration with PHI’s marketing scientists to identify new product opportunities.
 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Product design and engineering in areas that do not fit nicely into the classic engineering disciplines, drawing on scientific expertise in physics, chemistry, materials science and mathematics.
• Contribute to the development of PHI’s corporate technology and product strategy.
• Partner with product marketing and application colleagues in understanding customer needs, leading to product concepts that can meet those needs, and provide PHI competitive advantage.
• Track technology trends and developments that are relevant to PHI’s business and identify opportunities for PHI to leverage new technologies to enhance its products.
• Explore promising new technologies and product concepts via pre-product research and development.
• Assist colleagues is troubleshooting or solving challenging product and/or engineering problems.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

• Broad working knowledge of technologies and design techniques commonly used in the development of scientific instruments; especially analytical instrumentation based on manipulation of ions, electrons, and photons.
• Knowledge and understanding of applications and instrumentation in the surface & materials analysis market, including techniques such as:  XPS, AES, SIMS, SEM w/EDS & FIB, TEM w/EELS, STM, AFM, XRF, XRD
• A broad, inter-disciplinary, working knowledge in all the physical sciences, as well as many branches of classical engineering and mathematics.
• Problem Solving: The ability to assess complex scientific and engineering problems, define a problem-solving approach, and work to practical solutions.
• Leadership: The confidence, willingness, and ability to sell ideas to the organization and take a leadership role in their implementation.
• Working knowledge of computer and software technology, especially as a tool for scientific and engineering applications.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work very effectively as a member or a leader in project teams.

Position Requirements:

• Master’s degree in science or engineering; PhD preferred --- or equivalent experience and knowledge
    o Typical educational background would be in physics, chemistry, material science, or electromechanical engineering.
 • More than 5 years of experience in design and development of technically complex scientific instrumentation
    o Experience in the design of capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
