Sr. Staff Scientist

Position Purpose

Demonstrate expertise in the area of surface analysis by developing novel applications and capabilities and communications of these through publications and presentations. Communicate how the application of PHI products adds value to our customers. Increase market share of our products, sales and contribute to the development of new products. Illustrate the value of existing products through product demonstrations and effective communication of scientific materials.

Provide technical sales support throughout the sales process to PHI USA sales force, including technical training of Sales personnel and representatives, and training of personnel in related responsibilities. Supports an international applications effort by cooperation with Marketing in Japan and the United States to produce appropriate presentations and Sales support documents as may be required to meet the needs of surface analysis customers. The incumbent will have frequent direct customer contact and will gather and assess market applications and trends in support of the surface analysis instruments business. The ultimate responsibility is to facilitate the company in achieving the sales goals.

Essential Responsibilities

1.  Perform competitive analyses and product differentiation analyses including price, technical performance and application areas. Integrate this material as sales inputs to promote future R&D development to address changing market requirements.

3.  Review regularly all sales reports and sales opportunities with the sales force in order to promote a team oriented sales strategy throughout the sales cycle. Direct responsibility will be taken for the technical response: product related questions, application feasibility questions and tender technical response

4.  Organize and execute seminars both internally and for external prospects and customers

5.  Promote PHI’s products and technical reputation via technical sales support, development of product literature, scientific publication and participation in technical conferences, direct customer interactions

6.  Provide company wide, high level technical support (e.g. to manufacturing, sales and customer service)

7.  Identify new applications or other technologies which will lead to competitive advantage and establish access to those technologies via internal development or external collaboration

8.  Through the close interaction with customers, provide market information on future product development requirements

9.  Enable technology transfer to new products by providing technical applications leadership in strategic business planning and on product development teams

Minimum Education / Experience

·   PhD – Material Science, Chemistry Physics or related field

·   10 years related experience

Other requirements – 25% to 30% domestic and international travel

Field Service Engineer – Pittsburgh

The objective of this position is to minimize instrument downtime via preventive maintenance, anticipation of potential problems and rapid response to instrument performance issues. To ensure customer satisfaction, the FSE will communicate instrument status to the appropriate on site person and anticipate customer needs.

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Install instruments, components and upgrades at customer sites in assigned territory.
  2. Diagnose and repair system performance problems including hardware, software and networking components.
  3. Determine when to seek assistance from Technical Services as escalations occur for non-routine or more complex problems.
  4. Perform system preventative maintenance as necessary.
  5. Instruct / advise customer operator on basic system operation and preventative maintenance.
  6. Advise customers on repair status, preventative maintenance scheduling and/or related performance issues.
  7. Maintain service order status on database.
  8. Document system performance problems in appropriate database to contribute to quality trend identification.
  9. Ensure proper customer billing via timely completion of expense reports and time sheets. 


  • Associate degree
  • Four years related experience.
