Staff Scientist

PHI is currently seeking a staff scientist to join our team.

Staff Scientists are applied surface science experts that perform instrument demonstrations, contract jobs and support department objectives.  Staff Scientists provide technical expertise to the company that is used to shape demonstration strategies, create marketing materials, provide input for new product planning, and contribute to the solution of product problems.  Staff Scientists are part of the public scientific face of the company.

Primary Responsibilities

Demonstration and contract lab activities

  • Demonstrate the key performance strengths of the instrument
  • Perform instrument demonstrations
  • Perform contract jobs
  • Conduct contract reports reviews
  • Prepare demo reports that communicate the value of the results and the strengths of PHI’s instrument to the customer
  • Conducts demo report follow-up reviews with customers
  • Supports inter-departmental activities:  the review or preparation of sales tender documents, and corrective action efforts

Lab activities

  • Maintain instruments in “demo ready” condition
  • Perform software testing

Customer service activities

  • Provides on-site instrument training at customer sites and develops training materials

Marketing activities

  • Participates in new product planning activities based on the voice of a customers
  • Develops sales and marketing materials
  • Represents the company by attending and presenting at scientific conferences

Minimum Qualifications

MS or PhD Degree in Chemistry,  Physics,  Materials Science plus 5 years experience in surface analysis or analytical laboratory activities and at least 2 years of TOF-SIMS experience and preferred XPS experience.

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills

Travel

20% domestic and international travel

Electronics Design Engineer & Group Leader

PHI is seeking an electronics design engineer who can lead a small design group (4-6 members), coordinate activities with PHI’s contract electronics manufacturing partners, and be a technology leader in the design of custom, mixed signal, control and data acquisition electronics. The role will include hands-on design and prototyping (procure, build, test) of new electronics, personnel supervision, resource planning, and project management responsibilities. The electronics design group also partners with software and systems engineering in integration testing and provides consulting support to the system manufacturing and service organizations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and supervisory leadership to a small group of mixed signal electronic design engineers and technicians.
  • Provide leadership in creating and managing strategic partnerships with contract electronics manufacturers.
  • Translate system level requirements into unit level engineering specifications. Provide development cost and time estimates.
  • Design, prototype (procure, build, test), document, and support mixed signal electronic controls.
  • Manage the work assignments of team members; provide project planning input and resource estimates; work with our parent company in Japan (Ulvac PHI) and the PHI R&D management team to create the annual software engineering plan.
  • Maintain technical currency and insure PHI’s state-of-the-art design capability through self-study, and continuing education.
  • Partner with other engineering groups in managing system level design, integration testing and documentation.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Mixed signal electronics design, test & integration
    • Control and data acquisition/processing
    • Low noise, medium-high speed analog circuits
    • Medium-high voltage (200 v to 30 kV) analog circuits
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art PCB and chassis level electronics manufacturing technology and processes.
  • Knowledge of best practice design for manufacturability
  • Embedded control system design and test
  • Effective design project leadership: estimating, planning, risk mitigation, execution management
  • Competency in modern electronic design CAD tools: circuit layout, circuit simulation, firmware development, C-language & VB.net programing
  • Management acumen --- a demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervisory oversight of a small, highly technical design engineering team
  • Complex hardware/software system level design, test, and debug

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience.
  • More than 5 years of experience in design of chassis level, mixed signal control electronics for highly integrated hardware/software products; 10 years of experience preferred.
    • Experience in the design of capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
  • Occasional travel to business partner and customer locations, including internationally (<10 days/year).

Instrumentation Development Scientist

PHI is seeking an instrumentation development scientist who can be a company technology leader in the conceptualization and design of new products for the surface analysis instrumentation market. Working with a team of design engineers in the classic engineering disciplines (electronic, mechanical, software and systems) this role requires more of a scientific orientation, and an ability to fill the “white spaces” in an interdisciplinary product development group. It also requires a strong understanding of the applications for PHI’s products, allowing collaboration with PHI’s marketing scientists to identify new product opportunities.
 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Product design and engineering in areas that do not fit nicely into the classic engineering disciplines, drawing on scientific expertise in physics, chemistry, materials science and mathematics.
  • Contribute to the development of PHI’s corporate technology and product strategy.
  • Partner with product marketing and application colleagues in understanding customer needs, leading to product concepts that can meet those needs, and provide PHI competitive advantage.
  • Track technology trends and developments that are relevant to PHI’s business and identify opportunities for PHI to leverage new technologies to enhance its products.
  • Explore promising new technologies and product concepts via pre-product research and development.
  • Assist colleagues is troubleshooting or solving challenging product and/or engineering problems.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Broad working knowledge of technologies and design techniques commonly used in the development of scientific instruments; especially analytical instrumentation based on manipulation of ions, electrons, and photons.
  • Knowledge and understanding of applications and instrumentation in the surface & materials analysis market, including techniques such as:  XPS, AES, SIMS, SEM w/EDS & FIB, TEM w/EELS, STM, AFM, XRF, XRD
  • A broad, inter-disciplinary, working knowledge in all the physical sciences, as well as many branches of classical engineering and mathematics.
  • Problem Solving: The ability to assess complex scientific and engineering problems, define a problem-solving approach, and work to practical solutions.
  • Leadership: The confidence, willingness, and ability to sell ideas to the organization and take a leadership role in their implementation.
  • Working knowledge of computer and software technology, especially as a tool for scientific and engineering applications.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work very effectively as a member or a leader in project teams.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in science or engineering; PhD preferred --- or equivalent experience and knowledge
    • Typical educational background would be in physics, chemistry, material science, or electromechanical engineering.
  •  More than 5 years of experience in design and development of technically complex scientific instrumentation
    • Experience in the design of capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
  • Occasional travel to business partner and customer locations, including internationally (typically <10 days/year).
