STAFF SCIENTIST (TOF-SIMS)

Staff Scientists at Physical Electronics are applied surface science experts that perform instrument demonstrations and support marketing department objectives.  Staff Scientists provide technical expertise to the company that is used to shape demonstration strategies, create marketing materials, provide input for new product planning, and contribute to the solution of product problems.  Staff Scientists are part of the public scientific face of PHI USA.

Essential Responsibilities 

  • Demonstrate the key performance strengths of the surface analysis instrument to potential customers
  • Maintain instruments in “demo ready” condition for optimum demo performance
  • Prepare demo reports that communicate the value of the results and the strengths of PHI’s instrument to the customer
  • Conduct demo report follow up reviews with customers via Webex
  • Provide on-site instrument training at customer sites and develop appropriate training materials
  • Act as a company expert in the use and application of instruments in TOF SIMS product line
  • Develop audience appropriate sales and marketing materials for TOF SIMS product line as first author
  • Mentor product line co-workers in preparing marketing publications
  • Support inter-departmental activities including the review or preparation of sales tender documents, software testing, and corrective action efforts
  • Participate in new product planning activities with the voice of an expert user and a representative of the customer’s voice
  • Represent the company by attending and presenting at scientific conferences

QUALIFICATIONS

  • MS or PhD Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science
  • Five years of experience in surface analysis or analytical laboratory activities
  • Minimum of 2 years of TOF-SIMS experience 
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Works well in a team environment

Field Service Engineer (Detroit or Toledo)

The objective of this position is to minimize instrument downtime via preventive maintenance, the anticipation of potential problems and rapid response to instrument performance issues. To ensure customer satisfaction, the FSE will communicate instrument status to the appropriate on-site person and anticipate customer needs.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Install instruments, components, and upgrades at customer sites in assigned territory.
  • Diagnose and repair system performance problems including hardware, software, and networking components.
  • Determine when to seek assistance from Technical Services as escalations occur for non-routine or more complex problems.
  • Perform system preventative maintenance as necessary.
  • Instruct/advise customer operator on basic system operation and preventative maintenance.
  • Advise customers on repair status, preventative maintenance scheduling and/or related performance issues.
  • Maintain service order status on database.
  • Document system performance problems in appropriate database to contribute to quality trend identification.
  • Ensure proper customer billing via timely completion of expense reports and time sheets. 

Qualifications

Education -   Associate degree in electronics or related discipline

Experience - Four years of related experience

Knowledge and Skills:       

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Requires good computer skills with a workable knowledge of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat DC. Familiarity with Lotus Notes is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to details.
  • Strong ability to work independently.
  • Strong time management skills.
