XPS Staff Scientist

Staff Scientists at Physical Electronics (PHI) are applied surface science experts that perform instrument demonstrations and support marketing department objectives.  Staff Scientists provide technical expertise that is used to shape demonstration strategies, create marketing materials, provide input for new product planning, and contribute to product improvement.  Staff Scientists play a big role in representing PHI in the scientific community.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the key performance strengths of the PHI XPS instrument to potential customers
  • Maintain instruments in “demo ready” condition for optimum demo performance
  • Prepare demo reports that communicate value of the demo results and the strengths of PHI’s instrument to the customer
  • Conduct follow up reviews of the demo report with customers via Teams or Zoom
  • Provide virtual and/or on-site instrument training at customer sites and develop appropriate training materials
  • Serves as company expert in the use and application of instruments in the XPS product line
  • Develop audience appropriate sales and marketing materials for XPS product line as first author
  • Mentor XPS co-workers in system operation, data interpretation, and in preparing marketing publications
  • Support inter-departmental activities including the review / preparation of sales tender documents, software testing, hardware testing, and corrective action efforts
  • Participate in new product planning activities with the voice of an expert user and a representative of the customer’s voice
  • Represent the company by attending and presenting at scientific conferences

Qualifications

  • BS or MS degree with 5 + years of experience with XPS instrumentation
  • PhD Degree in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science with 2+ years XPS experience 
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Travel – 20% (domestic and international)

Electronics Design Engineer & Group Leader

PHI is seeking an electronics design engineer who can lead a small design group (4-6 members), coordinate activities with PHI’s contract electronics manufacturing partners, and be a technology leader in the design of custom, mixed signal, control and data acquisition electronics. The role will include hands-on design and prototyping (procure, build, test) of new electronics, personnel supervision, resource planning, and project management responsibilities. The electronics design group also partners with software and systems engineering in integration testing and provides consulting support to the system manufacturing and service organizations.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Provide technical and supervisory leadership to a small group of mixed signal electronic design engineers and technicians.
• Provide leadership in creating and managing strategic partnerships with contract electronics manufacturers.
• Translate system level requirements into unit level engineering specifications. Provide development cost and time estimates.
• Design, prototype (procure, build, test), document, and support mixed signal electronic controls.
• Manage the work assignments of team members; provide project planning input and resource estimates; work with our parent company in Japan (Ulvac PHI) and the PHI R&D management team to create the annual software engineering plan.
• Maintain technical currency and insure PHI’s state-of-the-art design capability through self-study, and continuing education.
• Partner with other engineering groups in managing system level design, integration testing and documentation.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

• Mixed signal electronics design, test & integration
    o Control and data acquisition/processing
    o Low noise, medium-high speed analog circuits
    o Medium-high voltage (200 v to 30 kV) analog circuits
• Knowledge of state-of-the-art PCB and chassis level electronics manufacturing technology and processes.
• Knowledge of best practice design for manufacturability
• Embedded control system design and test
• Effective design project leadership: estimating, planning, risk mitigation, execution management
• Competency in modern electronic design CAD tools: circuit layout, circuit simulation, firmware development, C-language & VB.net programing
• Management acumen --- a demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervisory oversight of a small, highly technical design engineering team
• Complex hardware/software system level design, test, and debug

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience.

Software Development Engineer & Group Leader

PHI is seeking a software development engineer who can lead a small software engineering group (4-6 members) in the development of instrument control and user interface software for all of PHI’s surface analysis products. This small, team-oriented development environment demands all members to participate in the entire product life cycle (requirements definition, design, code and test), and to work in a highly interdisciplinary project environment.

The role will include hands-on software development, product management/maintenance, and personnel supervision. The role also includes responsibility for translating market (customer) requirements into attractive, easy-to-use software designs: There is a particular need for a technical leader in the design and development of the user interface for PHI’s products, ensuring that the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) are exceptional.

PHI’s business needs also require a strategy to maximize software re-use across multiple products while minimizing maintenance costs.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Assume primary responsibility for the design and implementation of the PHI software user interface (UI) and ensure a very positive user experience (UX).
• Partner with other engineering groups in managing system level design, integration testing and documentation.
• Translate system control and user interface requirements into software design requirements. Provide development project cost and time estimates.

Instrumentation Development Scientist

PHI is seeking an instrumentation development scientist who can be a company technology leader in the conceptualization and design of new products for the surface analysis instrumentation market. Working with a team of design engineers in the classic engineering disciplines (electronic, mechanical, software and systems) this role requires more of a scientific orientation, and an ability to fill the “white spaces” in an interdisciplinary product development group. It also requires a strong understanding of the applications for PHI’s products, allowing collaboration with PHI’s marketing scientists to identify new product opportunities.
 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Product design and engineering in areas that do not fit nicely into the classic engineering disciplines, drawing on scientific expertise in physics, chemistry, materials science and mathematics.
• Contribute to the development of PHI’s corporate technology and product strategy.
• Partner with product marketing and application colleagues in understanding customer needs, leading to product concepts that can meet those needs, and provide PHI competitive advantage.
• Track technology trends and developments that are relevant to PHI’s business and identify opportunities for PHI to leverage new technologies to enhance its products.
• Explore promising new technologies and product concepts via pre-product research and development.
• Assist colleagues is troubleshooting or solving challenging product and/or engineering problems.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

• Broad working knowledge of technologies and design techniques commonly used in the development of scientific instruments; especially analytical instrumentation based on manipulation of ions, electrons, and photons.
• Knowledge and understanding of applications and instrumentation in the surface & materials analysis market, including techniques such as:  XPS, AES, SIMS, SEM w/EDS & FIB, TEM w/EELS, STM, AFM, XRF, XRD
• A broad, inter-disciplinary, working knowledge in all the physical sciences, as well as many branches of classical engineering and mathematics.
• Problem Solving: The ability to assess complex scientific and engineering problems, define a problem-solving approach, and work to practical solutions.
• Leadership: The confidence, willingness, and ability to sell ideas to the organization and take a leadership role in their implementation.
• Working knowledge of computer and software technology, especially as a tool for scientific and engineering applications.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work very effectively as a member or a leader in project teams.

Position Requirements:

• Master’s degree in science or engineering; PhD preferred --- or equivalent experience and knowledge
    o Typical educational background would be in physics, chemistry, material science, or electromechanical engineering.
 • More than 5 years of experience in design and development of technically complex scientific instrumentation
    o Experience in the design of capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
