Staff Scientist (XPS)

Staff Scientists at Physical Electronics (PHI) are applied surface science experts that perform instrument demonstrations and support marketing department objectives. Staff Scientists provide technical expertise that is used to shape demonstration strategies, create marketing materials, provide input for new product planning, and contribute to product improvement. Staff Scientists play a big role in representing PHI in the scientific community.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the key performance strengths of the PHI XPS instrument to potential customers
  • Maintain instruments in “demo ready” condition for optimum demo performance
  • Prepare demo reports that communicate value of the demo results and the strengths of PHI’s instrument to the customer
  • Conduct follow up reviews of the demo report with customers via Teams, Zoom, or Webex
  • Provide virtual and/or on-site instrument training at customer sites and develop appropriate training materials
  • Serves as company expert in the use and application of instruments in the XPS product line
  • Develop audience appropriate sales and marketing materials for XPS product line as first author
  • Mentor XPS co-workers in system operation, data interpretation, and in preparing marketing publications
  • Support inter-departmental activities including the review / preparation of sales tender documents, software testing, hardware testing, and corrective action efforts
  • Participate in new product planning activities with the voice of an expert user and a representative of the customer’s voice
  • Represent the company by attending and presenting at scientific conferences

Qualifications

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science with XPS experience
  • Experience with XPS instrumentation and XPS data interpretation would be a significant advantage.
  • Candidates with a BS or MS and experience with XPS instrumentation will also be considered for this position.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Works well in a team environment
  • Travel – 20% (domestic and international)

Senior Staff Scientist (XPS)

PHI is currently seeking a senior staff scientist to join our team.  This individual will demonstrate expertise in the area of XPS surface analysis by developing novel applications and capabilities and the communication of these through publications and presentations. Communicate how the application of PHI products adds value to our customers. Increase market share of our products and contribute to the development of new products. Illustrate the value of existing products through product demonstrations and effective communication of scientific materials.

Provide technical sales support throughout the sales process to PHI USA sales force, including technical training of Sales personnel and representatives, and training of personnel in related responsibilities. Support the international applications effort by cooperation with Marketing in Japan and the United States to produce appropriate presentations and sales support documents as may be required to meet the needs of surface analysis customers. The incumbent will have frequent direct customer contact and will gather and assess market applications and trends in support of the surface analysis instruments business.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform competitive analyses and product differentiation analyses including price, technical performance and application areas. Integrate this material as sales inputs to promote future R&D development to address changing market requirements.
  • Prepare and execute PHI USA sales force technical training including material preparation and distribution
  • Review regularly all sales reports and sales opportunities with the sales force in order to promote a team oriented sales strategy throughout the sales cycle. Direct responsibility will be taken for the technical response: product related questions, application feasibility questions and tender technical response
  • Organize and execute seminars both internally and for external prospects and customers
  • Promote PHI’s products and technical reputation via technical sales support, development of product literature, scientific publication and participation in technical conferences, direct customer interactions
  • Provide company wide, high level technical support (e.g. to manufacturing, sales and customer service)
  • Identify new applications or other technologies which will lead to competitive advantage and establish access to those technologies via internal development or external collaboration
  • Through the close interaction with customers, provide market information on future product development requirements
  • Enable technology transfer to new products by providing technical applications leadership in strategic business planning and on product development teams

Minimum Qualifications

  • XPS expertise
  • 10 years progressive experience
  • PhD preferred, Masters considered with appropriate experience
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Supervision – supervises junior staff (when appropriate)
  • Travel – 20% (domestic and international)

Staff Scientist

PHI is currently seeking a staff scientist to join our team.

Electronics Design Engineer & Group Leader

PHI is seeking an electronics design engineer who can lead a small design group (4-6 members), coordinate activities with PHI’s contract electronics manufacturing partners, and be a technology leader in the design of custom, mixed signal, control and data acquisition electronics. The role will include hands-on design and prototyping (procure, build, test) of new electronics, personnel supervision, resource planning, and project management responsibilities. The electronics design group also partners with software and systems engineering in integration testing and provides consulting support to the system manufacturing and service organizations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and supervisory leadership to a small group of mixed signal electronic design engineers and technicians.
  • Provide leadership in creating and managing strategic partnerships with contract electronics manufacturers.
  • Translate system level requirements into unit level engineering specifications. Provide development cost and time estimates.
  • Design, prototype (procure, build, test), document, and support mixed signal electronic controls.
  • Manage the work assignments of team members; provide project planning input and resource estimates; work with our parent company in Japan (Ulvac PHI) and the PHI R&D management team to create the annual software engineering plan.
  • Maintain technical currency and insure PHI’s state-of-the-art design capability through self-study, and continuing education.
  • Partner with other engineering groups in managing system level design, integration testing and documentation.

Critical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Mixed signal electronics design, test & integration
    • Control and data acquisition/processing
    • Low noise, medium-high speed analog circuits
    • Medium-high voltage (200 v to 30 kV) analog circuits
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art PCB and chassis level electronics manufacturing technology and processes.
  • Knowledge of best practice design for manufacturability
  • Embedded control system design and test
  • Effective design project leadership: estimating, planning, risk mitigation, execution management
  • Competency in modern electronic design CAD tools: circuit layout, circuit simulation, firmware development, C-language & VB.net programing
  • Management acumen --- a demonstrated ability to provide leadership and supervisory oversight of a small, highly technical design engineering team
  • Complex hardware/software system level design, test, and debug

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred or equivalent relevant experience.
  • More than 5 years of experience in design of chassis level, mixed signal control electronics for highly integrated hardware/software products; 10 years of experience preferred.
    • Experience in the design of capital equipment for applications in scientific research or advanced manufacturing preferred.
  • Occasional travel to business partner and customer locations, including internationally (<10 days/year).
