Analytical Lab and Marketing Manager
Physical Electronics (PHI) is a subsidiary of ULVAC-PHI, the world's leading supplier of UHV surface analysis instrumentation used for research and development of advanced materials in a number of high technology fields including nanotechnology, microelectronics, storage media, bio-medical, and basic materials such as metals, polymers, and coatings. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Analytical Lab and Marketing Manager to lead our dynamic team of applications scientists. In your role, you will be responsible for overseeing the operations of the analytical laboratory and marketing team, playing a key role in interfacing with sales, mentoring and leading a team of applications scientists, and creating a fulfilling work environment that fosters employee growth and satisfaction. This manager is responsible for ensuring that the technical team can effectively support the sales process and help the company achieve its sales goals. You will be a crucial part of our mission to drive discoveries through surface science.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Identify team member strengths and growth opportunities. The manager must be able to assess the skills and abilities of each team member and identify their areas of expertise.
- Align priorities. The manager must work with the sales team to identify the company's top sales priorities and ensure that the technical team is aligned with these priorities. This may involve developing training programs, setting goals, and providing resources to the technical team. Manager will work with Product Managers on aligning technical team members to specific projects.
- Analyze training needs. Conduct ongoing assessments to identify training needs and skills gaps within the technical team. Develop strategies to address these gaps effectively.
- Provide sales training opportunities. The manager is responsible for providing the technical team with the sales training they need to be effective in their roles. This may involve developing and delivering training programs, sending team members to external training courses, or coaching team members on-the-job.
- Manage the technical team. The manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the applications lab team. This includes setting goals, providing feedback, and evaluating performance. The manager is also responsible for ensuring that the team is meeting deadlines and delivering high-quality work.
- Operational Leadership. Provide strategic direction and day-to-day management of the Analytical Lab department, ensuring smooth operations and efficient utilization of resources.
- Team Leadership. Mentor and lead a team of talented scientists, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment.
- Employee Fulfillment. Create and maintain a workplace culture that encourages personal and professional growth, job satisfaction, and employee fulfillment.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. or Master's degree in a relevant scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science) or 5+ years’ of relevant experience.
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor and lead a team effectively.
- Strong communication and presentation skills to interact effectively with sales, customers, and internal teams.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
- Collaborative and open-minded, with a positive attitude toward problem-solving and innovation.
- Experience in material science, analytical laboratory operations and instrumentation.

Field Service Engineer – Bay Area
We are currently seeking a Field Service Engineer located in the San Francisco Bay area to join our team.
Primary Responsibilities:
As a Field Service Engineer for Physical Electronics, you will perform installations of complex surface analysis instruments, including customer operational training. You will also carry out scheduled planned maintenance and provide repair and troubleshooting service at customer locations. This position requires frequent domestic travel, as well as periodically in eastern Canada.
This position does not directly support a fab line and does not require shift, overnight or on-call work assignments.
Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of a 2-4 year degree in electronics, physics, or engineering field, or equivalent Military electronics training, be able to read and interpret schematics, and be able to communicate and deal effectively with customers. A valid driver’s license is required as well as a passport or ability to obtain a passport. Experience with ultra-high vacuum is a plus.

Senior Mechanical Engineer
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team. In this position, design and engineer standard and custom products at an integrated system level of complexity. These products are typically state of the art with demanding performance specifications, and tight tolerances, and may require unique fabrication methods.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Participate in or lead standard and custom product planning and quoting; write defining engineering specifications.
- Develop product cost estimates and project proposals in order to generate detailed schedules and budgets.
- Execute projects/programs per plan.
- Use engineering skills and knowledge to design standard and custom systems that meet performance and cost specifications.
- Via team interaction and experience, review and optimize new product designs (yours and others) for manufacturability and serviceability.
- Define and perform reliability tests in order to confirm new product compliance to reliability specifications.
- Generate procedures, manuals and detail / assembly drawings in order to clearly and accurately document product design.
- Provide training and problem-solving assistance to other engineers, manufacturing, and customer service.
- As necessary, promptly take corrective action on design deficiencies via PHI procedures.
- Leverage training, seminars, classes, research, and job experience in order to identify, develop, implement, and mentor other engineers in methods to improve product performance, reliability, and cost.
Qualifications
- 4-year or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science or related field. 4-year degree
- 7+ years of experience or an advanced degree with 3+ years of experience
